General Valery Gerasimov is leading Russian forces in Ukraine. He said Russia's military would be reformed to deal with the possible expansion of the military alliance NATO and the artificial war created by the West's united anti-Russian stance. Al-Jazeera news.
Earlier this month, President Vladimir Putin appointed Army Chief of General Staff Valery Gerasimov to lead Russian forces in the war in Ukraine. In his first speech after assuming charge, he spoke about the army rally and various issues arising from the war that started 11 months ago.
General Valery Gerasimov said in an interview with Argumenti I Fact, a Moscow-based press, "The modern economic relations issues are not fully taken into account in the training system of new soldiers in our country at the army assembly. That's why I had to fix these things.'
Keeping in mind the security threat against Russia, he said that the announcement of reforms in the military was made in mid-January.
General Valery Gerasimov also spoke about the main security threats. "These (security) threats currently include the desire to expand NATO to Finland and Sweden, as well as the threat of using Ukraine to launch an artificial war against our country," he said.
Finland and Sweden applied for NATO membership last year after the Russian invasion of Ukraine. However, the two countries have not yet received membership.
How to reform
General Valery Gerasimov has indicated how to reform the military. He said there are plans to create two additional military districts (known as military zones) in Moscow and Leningrad. Apart from this, three 'Motorized Rifle Divisions' will be formed to conduct operations in Kherson and Zaporizhia regions of Ukraine. This division is formed with various units of the army to conduct operations against the opposing forces in the war.
After the start of the war in Ukraine, it was assumed that Russia would 'win' the war within days. But it didn't happen. On the other hand, the Russian Ministry of Defense came under criticism for the loss of lives and losses of soldiers in the war. But General Valery Gerasimov admitted that it was not easy to 'win' this war. He said that modern Russia has never faced such intense military hostility from enemies. Due to this, the Russian forces were forced to carry out desperate operations to stabilize the situation.
Explaining the reason for this, General Valery Gerasimov said, 'Our country and armed forces have to fight against the entire Western world united today.' In this context, he further said, 'Ensuring the protection of the country's sovereignty and territorial integrity is the main goal of reforming our military.'
